Yesterday

There is no soft way to write this one, so here is the scoreline first: Belgium 4, United States 1. The hosts went out in the Round of 16 in Seattle, in front of their own crowd, and by the hour mark it was not a contest. We wanted the USA the way every American did, but the forecaster we call the “Sharp” had Belgium at 63% two days ago, the “Analyst” was colder still on the hosts at 72% Belgium, and only the “Scout” was willing to plant a flag on the home side at 52%. When the whistle went, the model that does not care how any of us feel was the one holding the receipt. We keep all of them, the good nights and the ones like this, on the accuracy page.

Cristiano Ronaldo, out of his last World Cup as Spain win 1-0

Spain beat Portugal 1-0 on a Mikel Merino goal that did not arrive until stoppage time, and out with it went Cristiano Ronaldo's last World Cup, at 41, watching from the bench when the winner landed. We had Spain across most of the panel, the analyst at 68%, the diehard at 57%, and the sharp at 70%. The scout took Portugal, alone on the board again, and missed again. Two knockout games, two clean calls from the sharp, and its tournament ledger on advance picks now reads 20 from 22.

That 20-from-22 is the reason we are going to lean on the sharp today instead of hedging around it.

Today's Games

Two more Round of 16 ties, and the sharp holds a strong opinion on one and a nervier one on the other.

Argentina vs Egypt, the Sharp's 84 percent call

Argentina against Egypt is the closest thing this bracket has to a formality, and the numbers are blunt about why. Argentina's attack rates at 2.36 against an Egypt defense at 0.58, a gap the analyst flatly called a chasm, and it is hard to argue the word down. The sharp sits at 84% Argentina, its heaviest number of the day, and even the scout, who earns his keep finding the other side of a game, only talks Egypt up to 24%. His note is that Mohamed Salah's hamstring looked like a genuine problem last time he was on the pitch, and that Egypt are missing two defenders they can badly not afford against Messi's side. The chalk is heavy here, and for once it looks fairly priced.

Switzerland vs Colombia, the Sharp's 58 percent call

Switzerland against Colombia is the coin toss. The analyst leans Colombia at 62% on a defense that held Portugal to 0.7 expected goals, the diehard gets there the same way at 55%, and the sharp lands at 58% Colombia while admitting it is paying up only barely. The scout's tiebreaker comes from off the field: a virus has run through the Swiss camp and their top scorers Manzambi and Vargas are both doubts, which he reads as a heavier blow than anything Colombia are carrying. Leaning on the record, our call is Colombia to advance, but this is the one to watch if you enjoy variance, and the full board is on the World Cup page.

The Main Event: UFC 329

Now the fight, which is why a lot of you opened this. McGregor vs Holloway 2 headlines UFC 329 in Las Vegas on Saturday, thirteen years after a young Conor McGregor out-pointed a 21-year-old Max Holloway at featherweight in Boston. Both men have lived several careers since 2013, and the rematch lands at welterweight, 170 pounds, with McGregor 37 years old and five years removed from his last walk to the cage.

Here is the tale of the tape. McGregor comes in at 22-6, five foot nine, southpaw, and his one clear physical edge is reach, 74 inches to Holloway's 69, a full five inches of extra lever. Holloway is 27-9, two inches the taller man at five foot eleven, orthodox, 34 years old, and busier everywhere it counts. He lands 6.91 significant strikes a minute to McGregor's 5.32, and the gap only widens once you net out what comes back the other way: Holloway's differential is plus 2.30 strikes a minute, McGregor's is plus 0.66. Holloway defends 58% of strikes to McGregor's 54%, and stuffs 81% of takedowns to McGregor's 66%.

McGregor vs Holloway 2 tale of the tape

Our quant, Vega, reads all of that and settles on Holloway at 72%, by decision at 65%. The reasoning is that McGregor's own skill ratings run negative in the exact places this fight gets decided, striking defense and control defense, and that a fighter who has not finished anyone since 2020 is not the man to walk through 25 minutes of the highest-volume pressure in the division. Scoop, who works the news side, gets to Holloway at 65% and adds the human read. McGregor's camp has been all business and briefing reporters about a "different thud" at 170, but five years away is an eternity at 37, and Holloway has been sparring top welterweights on purpose, to be ready to survive an early storm before his pace takes the later rounds.

Then there is the field. We run seven models on every fight, and this one gave them nothing to argue about. All seven pick Holloway, all seven by decision, in a band that runs from 73% up to 85%. Add Vega and Scoop and it is nine forecasters, nine Holloways, nine decisions. Both fighters are sitting on zero finishes across their recent bouts, so the method call is really a statement that this goes the distance, and that the younger, busier, more defensively sound man banks the rounds. If you came in a McGregor believer, the honest thing we can hand you is that the numbers do not see it, in the same way they did not see the USA hanging with Belgium.

The AI field on McGregor vs Holloway, nine of nine pick Holloway

None of that is a lock, and we do not sell locks. McGregor's left hand has ended fights before the analytics ever got a vote, and a 74-inch reach on a southpaw is exactly the tool that turns one clean counter into a highlight. A puncher's chance is a real thing. It is also, by definition, a small number, and right now the whole board is quoting you the same small number.

The Diamond

Sixteen games on the baseball card, and the morning scout sweep flagged one worth watching for the run environment. The Athletics have been the sport's loudest hot-weather offense, averaging 11.4 total runs and clearing 8.5 in 67% of their warm-weather games across a sample of 85, and tonight they travel to Detroit. The problem is who is standing in the way, because Tarik Skubal is waiting, and our model total sits at just 7.8, the numbers siding hard with the ace over the heat history. That is the kind of split worth flagging rather than pretending to resolve, and here is the honest asterisk on it: this ran at nine in the morning, before Detroit's game-time temperature posted, so the "hot weather" half of the story is still a forecast and not a fact. The matchup page will have the confirmed conditions by first pitch.

One more from the receipts drawer while we are here. The White Sox carry a genuinely odd number, winning just 34% of their games in warm weather across 194 of them, which is a big enough pile to be more than a fluke, and they host Boston tonight with both starters throwing left-handed.

We graded last night in full, the two correct World Cup calls and the scout's two misses, and tonight gets the same treatment here tomorrow. If the McGregor number lands wrong with you, remember it is the same kind of read that told American fans the truth about Belgium before kickoff, and we would rather run the call our own crowd does not want to hear than the one it does.

Explore, Upgraded

One housekeeping note before you go, because it ties straight into everything above. Every number in this post came out of two tools we just rebuilt and opened up to subscribers. The tale of the tape on McGregor and Holloway, the reach edge, the striking differential, the 81% takedown defense, all of it lives in UFC Explore, where a Pro subscriber can pull the same breakdown on any fighter on the roster and set two of them side by side before a card. The Athletics heat number and the White Sox warm-weather oddity both came out of MLB Explore, a query engine that sits on top of our full game-log warehouse. You pick a team, pick a condition, home or road, against a left-hander, day or night, warm or cold, and it hands back the split with its sample size attached, the same way we quote it in these posts.

We opened it up because a receipt you can check yourself beats one you have to take on trust. Pro subscribers can now run these queries on any team or any fighter, either to verify the work we did above or to go hunting for an angle we walked past. Both tools are live now, and they are the best reason yet to be on the paid side.
