Do southpaws win more in the UFC?

Yes, but only a little. When a southpaw fights an orthodox opponent in the UFC, the southpaw wins 53% of the time, across 805 such fights since 2020. It is a real edge, and a modest one.

The theory is old and sound: most fighters spend their careers training against orthodox opponents, so a left-handed stance is simply less familiar. The lead hand is on the wrong side, the power hand comes from an unexpected angle, and the footwork battle for the outside gets weird. Familiarity is the whole edge, which is why it is small rather than decisive.

A few points above even. Enough to notice over hundreds of fights, not enough to bet a house on any single one.

It is worth keeping the size of this in perspective. A 53% edge is smaller than the effect of being younger, and smaller than being the clear favorite. Stance is a tilt, not a takeover. The best southpaws win because they are excellent fighters who also happen to be awkward, and the awkwardness is a bonus on top.

There is a wrinkle worth watching: when both fighters are southpaws, the edge vanishes, because now the orthodox fighter is the unfamiliar one. The advantage lives entirely in the mismatch, not in left-handedness itself.

How we counted

Every number here comes from our own fight database: 3,068 UFC fights since June 2020, scraped from the official statistics and rebuilt nightly. We compute rates across all qualifying fights, never a cherry-picked window. Small splits are noted where they matter. This is descriptive history, not a prediction, and it updates on its own.
