UFC Abu Dhabi: our main card breakdown, and the fight the AIs won't agree on

Hey everyone. Fight week is here, and this one lands Saturday from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Magomed Ankalaev headlines his first walk to the Octagon since losing the light heavyweight belt to Alex Pereira last fall, and he does it against Bogdan Guskov, who took the fight on less than two weeks notice after Khalil Rountree Jr. pulled out hurt. Short notice or not, we ran the whole main card through our ratings, our tale of the tape, and our nine-model AI panel. Here is what came back.

Ankalaev vs Guskov (light heavyweight)

No drama at the top. Our composite PS Rating has Ankalaev at 1964 against Guskov's 1713, one of the widest gaps on the card, and our model makes him a 67 percent favorite to get his hand raised, most likely by knockout at 62 percent. The AI panel is even more sure: all nine models are on Ankalaev, averaging around 77 percent confidence, and they agree on the KO/TKO. Guskov earns the "Hitman" nickname honestly and finishes everyone he beats, but he trades in a lot of leather both ways, absorbing more than four strikes a minute with only 44 percent striking defense. Against a technician like Ankalaev on his best behavior, that is the worry.

Erceg vs Temirov (flyweight): the fight they can't agree on

This is the fun one. Our model likes Steve Erceg at 63 percent, and the betting markets have him favored too. Our nine AIs? Eight of them took Ramazan Temirov. That is the biggest split on the whole card, our model and the market on one side, the AI field on the other. Temirov is 19-3 and dangerous, but we only have two UFC fights of data on him, so our rating carries a wide uncertainty band, while Erceg has eight fights on the tape and a title-shot pedigree. When the machines break from both us and the books, it is worth watching, win or lose. We grade it in public either way.

Dulatov vs Turman (welterweight)

Islam "The Ripper" Dulatov is one of the brightest prospects on the card, and the numbers pop: 8.78 significant strikes landed per minute in our data, against a fighter our PS Rating puts nearly 450 points lower, 1667 to 1218. Our model makes Dulatov a 67 percent favorite and the AI panel is unanimous on him, leaning toward a finish. The caveat we always flag: Dulatov has just one UFC fight in our system, so the rating is confident but young. Wellington Turman is the grizzled vet at 18-8, but everyone in our building, silicon included, is on the youngster.

Rzepecki vs Zaynukov (lightweight): undefeated meets undefeated

Two perfect records collide here, Damian "The Butcher" Rzepecki at 10-0 and Contender Series graduate Magomed Zaynukov at 8-0. Zaynukov is making his UFC debut, so we do not have a rating on him yet, which makes this one a pure eye-test fight. And it gave us our second disagreement of the night: our model narrowly leans Rzepecki at 57 percent, while all nine AIs took Zaynukov, most of them expecting a knockout. Debut hype against our model's read. Another one we are happy to let the scorecards settle.

Fortune vs Kuniev (heavyweight)

The big men close the main card, and here the room is back in sync. Our model has Rizvan Kuniev at 63 percent and the AI panel is unanimous on him too, though everyone expects this one to reach the judges. Kuniev brings a 93 percent takedown defense number, which matters against Tyrell Fortune, a decorated wrestler who lands three takedowns a fight but only two strikes a minute. If Fortune cannot drag it to the mat, the data says it is Kuniev's night.

What we track, and what the panel sees

Every one of these reads comes from the same place: our PS Rating composite, a calibrated blend of Elo, Glicko and net rating, plus the full striking and grappling tale of the tape, a method model that estimates how each fight ends, and our nine-model AI panel that calls every bout line-blind. Add it up and the field is unanimous on four of the five main card fights, Ankalaev, Dulatov, Zaynukov and Kuniev, and split only on the flyweight. They are also leaning toward finishes at the top of the card and decisions at the bottom.
